Fragrance oil or essential oil

Fragrance oils are blended scents, so they cover far more ground than nature does. Bubblegum, vanilla, fresh linen and designer-style scents only exist as fragrance oils. They also hold their scent through the heat of a candle and the alkalinity of soap far better than most essential oils, and they cost less. If you want a natural botanical scent instead, look at essential oils.

How much to use

As a general guide, candles take roughly 5 to 8% fragrance and soap and bath products take roughly 2 to 5%. Individual products carry their own rates, so check the product page. Start at the lower end and adjust, because a sweet or heavy scent can tip from lovely to overpowering, and more fragrance does not always mean more throw.

Choosing by project

For candles, look for scents with body that carry across a room, such as vanilla, coffee, spice and wood. For melt and pour soap and bath products, fresh and fruity scents hold up well and read as clean. For perfume making and roll-ons, floral and designer-style blends do the work. For reed diffusers, pick something you are happy to smell continuously rather than in bursts.

Working tips

Add fragrance once your base has cooled slightly off the melt, then stir it in thoroughly so it binds rather than pooling. Use skin-safe oils for anything that stays on the body, not candle-only ones. Some vanilla-rich scents naturally discolour a white base to cream or tan over time, which is normal rather than a fault. Store bottles capped, cool and out of direct sunlight.

Sizes start at 10ml for testing and run up to bulk, so you can trial a scent before committing to it.
