What essential oils are, and when to use them instead

Essential oils are distilled or pressed from plants, so the scent is the plant itself rather than a blend built in a lab. They suit makers who want a natural ingredients list, and they bring a botanical character that fragrance oils cannot copy. The trade-off is that they cost more, the range is limited to what plants actually produce, and some scents fade or shift in the heat of a candle or the alkalinity of soap. Citrus oils in particular are lively but light, while lavender, peppermint and eucalyptus hold up better.

Dilution and safe use

Essential oils are concentrated and are not meant to go onto skin neat. Blend them into a carrier oil such as sweet almond or coconut, or into a base, and follow the dilution guidance for what you are making. Keep them away from children and pets, store them capped, cool and out of the light, and patch test a new blend.

Choosing by scent family

Citrus oils such as lemon, orange and lemongrass are bright and fresh and work in cleaning makes, room sprays and summery bath products. Florals such as lavender and rose geranium suit soaps, balms and bath salts. Herbal and green oils such as rosemary, tea tree and eucalyptus give a clean, sharp lift. Woods and resins add depth and hold a blend together, which is why they sit underneath so many perfume blends.

What to make

Bath salts, body butters and balms, roll-on blends, room sprays, reed diffusers and naturally scented melt and pour soap.

Carrier and infused oils are stocked alongside the pure oils, so you can pick up both in one order.
