Start with a base

Almost everything in bath and body starts from a blended base that you scent, colour and decant. It is the fastest route to a finished make and it skips the tricky chemistry. A lotion base makes body and hand lotion, a body butter base whips up thick and rich, a liquid soap base covers hand wash, shower gel and bubble bath from one bottle, and a mousse base whips into soft foaming clouds for jars.

Or build from raw ingredients

If you would rather formulate yourself, you need oils and butters for the oil phase, emulsifying wax to hold oil and water together, and powders and salts for texture. Anything containing water needs a preservative if you are keeping it more than a few days or selling it.

Choose by project

Bath bombs need baking soda, citric acid and a bath bomb mould. Keep everything dry and add liquid a spray at a time, or the fizz sets off in the bowl. Bath salts start from Epsom salts or Himalayan pink salt, stirred with fragrance and left to dry before jarring, since jarring damp is what makes salts clump. Scrubs pair a salt or sugar with a carrier oil. Lotions and butters come off a base, and lip balms and lip gloss have their own bases and containers.

Practical notes

All our fragrance oils are cosmetic grade and suit products that stay on the body. Patch test first. Work with clean, dry jars and bottles. Add fragrance once a mixture has cooled, since heat carries scent off. Judge the final texture cold rather than warm, because lotions and butters firm up considerably as they cool.
