Choosing a wax
The wax decides how your candle burns, how it looks and what it can be poured into. Soy is the natural plant wax most makers choose for candles in glass. It burns slowly, has a soft creamy finish and washes out of a jar with hot soapy water. It is soft, so it suits containers rather than free-standing pillars. Paraffin holds a strong scent throw and takes dye brilliantly, which makes it the choice for boldly coloured and heavily fragranced candles, and it comes in easy-pour beads so there is no chopping. Gel is crystal clear and is what you want for suspending shells, beads and botanicals in a candle that doubles as decor. Body butter wax melts at a low, skin-friendly temperature so the melt pool can be used as a massage butter.
Wicks, containers and scent
Match the wick to the diameter of your container. A wick that is too small tunnels down the middle and leaves a wall of wax behind, one that is too large smokes and burns hot. If you are unsure, test one candle before you pour a batch. Use heat-safe glass, tins or ceramic, never thin plastic. For scent, use a fragrance oil rated for candles, or an essential oil if you prefer a natural scent, and add it once the wax has cooled slightly off the melt so the heat does not carry it straight off.
Pouring tips
Warm your container before pouring so the wax does not pull away from the sides as it sets, stir fragrance in for a good two minutes so it binds properly, and let candles cool slowly at room temperature. Rushing the cool is what causes cratered and bumpy tops. Let a new soy candle cure for 10 to 14 days, or a paraffin candle about 7 days, before its first burn so the scent settles.
