How to Make Floating Candles
9 June 2026These easy coffee candles fill your home with a warm, comforting coffee aroma, perfect for cosy winter evenings and load-shedding. A simple recipe from The Soap Barn using a few candle making supplies.
What you will need
- 1kg candle wax
- Nylon core wick
- Coffee fragrance (or chocolate fragrance, or both)
- A heat-safe glass or mug
All available from our candle making supplies range.
Method
- Melt your wax gently in a pot on the stove. When melted, add your fragrance oil.
- Position your wick in the container and pour in the melted wax right to the top.
- Leave to set. It will set with a small hole in the middle, this is normal, as wax shrinks as it sets.
- Melt your leftover wax and top up the hole. Leave to cool and set completely.

Tips & variations
Once you have made your coffee candles, here are a few ways to get a great result and put your own spin on it.
- Match your wick to the container width: too small and it tunnels, too large and it smokes.
- Add fragrance at around 60C so the scent binds properly into the wax.
- Trim the wick to about 5mm before every burn to keep the flame steady and cut down on soot.
Make it your own: swap the fragrance for any scent in our range, or add a touch of candle dye for a different look.
