A simple hand sanitiser you can make at home in five minutes. Keep the alcohol at 70% or more of the finished bottle and it will do its job, while the aloe and glycerine stop it drying your hands out.
What you will need
- 75ml Spraying Alcohol (Ethanol 96%)
- 20ml Aloe Vera Gel
- 5ml Glycerine
- A few drops of essential oil or fragrance
- A hand sanitiser bottle
Method
- Measure the ethanol into a clean glass jug.
- Stir in the aloe vera gel and the glycerine until the mix is smooth and clear.
- Add a few drops of essential oil and stir again.
- Pour into your hand sanitiser bottle and close it.
- Leave the sealed bottle to stand for 72 hours before you use it, so any spores in the bottle are killed off.

Tips & variations
Once you have made your hand sanitiser, here are a few ways to get a great result and make it your own.
- Keep the ethanol at 70% or more of the finished bottle. Any weaker and it stops working, so do not top it up with water.
- Alcohol is flammable. Mix and store away from heat, flames and direct sun.
- Aloe vera gel makes a thicker gel, more alcohol makes a thinner spray. Adjust to suit your bottle.
- Label every batch with the date so you know how fresh it is.
