How to Make Chocolate-Orange Body Butter
9 June 2026Make rich, creamy body butter in minutes with our lotion base, perfect for dry winter skin. This easy recipe from The Soap Barn uses simple ingredients from our body and bath range.
What you will need
- 500ml lotion (body butter) base
- Warm water
- Fragrance of your choice
- A jar
All available from our body and bath range.
Method
- Melt 500ml lotion base in the microwave for about three minutes.
- Pour into a pot over low heat and stir in warm water: 500ml base to 1.5 litres warm water makes a thick body butter (1 part base to 3 parts water).
- Stir until smooth and creamy, then mix in your fragrance.
- Leave to cool, then beat with an electric beater for a thick, rich finish and decant into jars. Tip: more water makes lotion (1:4), face cream (1:5) or hand lotion (1:6).

Tips & variations
Once you have made your body butter, here are a few ways to get a great result and make it your own.
- Whip it once cooled but still soft for that light, fluffy texture; too warm and it stays runny.
- Keep it away from heat, body butter can melt and lose its whip on a hot day.
- Store in a cool, dry spot and use clean, dry hands or a spatula to keep it fresh.
Make it your own: change the fragrance or essential oil, or tweak the colour to suit the season.
