How to Make Irish Coffee Candles

A layered gel-and-wax candle set in a glass coffee mug, coffee-scented and looking just like a real Irish coffee.

Method

1. Melt the gel wax in a pot over very low heat until it runs like water.
2. Add coffee fragrance and colour it with the brown colouring.
3. Dip the sustainer end of the wick into the melted gel and stand it upright in the centre of the mug.
4. Pour the melted gel into the mug about three-quarters of the way up and leave to set.
5. Gently melt the powder wax, add fragrance, and pour it over the gel right to the top.
6. Leave to set. A small hole may form in the middle as the wax shrinks, this is normal, top up with a little melted wax if you wish.

Tips & variations

Once you have made your irish coffee candles, here are a few ways to get a great result and put your own spin on it.

• Match your wick to the container width: too small and it tunnels, too large and it smokes.
• Add fragrance at around 60C so the scent binds properly into the wax.
• On the first light, let the melt pool reach the edges before blowing it out, it prevents tunnelling later.
