How to Make a Gel Candy Candle
11 June 2026A layered gel-and-wax candle set in a glass coffee mug, coffee-scented and looking just like a real Irish coffee.
What you will need
- 1L gel wax
- 1kg powder wax
- Glass coffee mugs
- Pre-waxed wicks
- Coffee fragrance
- Brown candle colouring
Method
- Melt the gel wax in a pot over very low heat until it runs like water.
- Add coffee fragrance and colour it with the brown colouring.
- Dip the sustainer end of the wick into the melted gel and stand it upright in the centre of the mug.
- Pour the melted gel into the mug about three-quarters of the way up and leave to set.
- Gently melt the powder wax, add fragrance, and pour it over the gel right to the top.
- Leave to set. A small hole may form in the middle as the wax shrinks, this is normal, top up with a little melted wax if you wish.

Tips & variations
Once you have made your irish coffee candles, here are a few ways to get a great result and put your own spin on it.
- Match your wick to the container width: too small and it tunnels, too large and it smokes.
- Add fragrance at around 60C so the scent binds properly into the wax.
- On the first light, let the melt pool reach the edges before blowing it out, it prevents tunnelling later.
Make it your own: swap the fragrance for any scent in our range, or add a touch of candle dye for a different look.
