Which Candle Wick Should I Use?
16 September 2026There is no single best candle wax. The right one depends on whether you are pouring into a container, what finish you want and how you plan to use the candle. Here is what each of the waxes we stock is actually suited to.
Soy Wax 1kg, R210
A plant wax made from soybean oil, and the one most people start with. It gives an opaque, creamy finish and washes out of a jar with hot soapy water. It is soft, so it belongs in containers rather than free standing candles. Soy can show frosting or slight surface variation as it sets. That is cosmetic and normal for soy.
Candle Wax Beads (Paraffin), from R95
Paraffin in easy pour bead form, so there is no chopping or grating. It takes dye strongly and holds fragrance well, which makes it the one to reach for when you want bold colour and a pronounced scent.
Powder Candle Wax (White), from R95
A fine white powder that is quick to weigh and quick to melt. A straightforward base for container candles, ready to take colour and fragrance.
Gel Candle Wax, from R155
Crystal clear, and the only one of these that lets you suspend things. Shells, beads, dried botanicals and glass ornaments all sit visibly in the set gel. Use it when the candle is as much an object as a light.
Body Butter Candle Wax 1L, R265
Melts at a low temperature so the melt pool stays soft enough to be used as a massage butter. A different product to a standard candle rather than a substitute for one.
Beeswax Natural Block, from R85
Natural golden beeswax with its own honey scent, which will carry through into the finished candle. Hard and dense.
Beeswax Bleached (Beads), from R35
The same wax with the colour and scent taken out, in bead form. Choose this when you want beeswax but a neutral base for your own fragrance and colour.
Candelilla Wax, from R69.95
A hard plant wax from the candelilla shrub. It is used in small quantities to firm up a formulation rather than as a wax on its own, and it is the usual plant based stand in for beeswax.
Quick picks
- First candle in a glass jar: soy wax
- Strong colour and strong scent: paraffin beads
- Something with objects suspended in it: gel
- A massage candle: body butter candle wax
- A natural wax with its own character: beeswax natural block
One thing to note
We stock single waxes rather than ready mixed blends, so if you want blended characteristics you would combine them yourself and test the result.
Then choose the rest
Match your wax to a wick sized for your container, pick a fragrance oil rated for candles or an essential oil, and colour it with a dye made for wax rather than a water based colourant.
Whichever wax you choose, burn test one candle in the exact container, fragrance and wick you plan to use before you pour a batch.
